The Perfect One Day in Agra Itinerary

One day in Agra is enough for the three great Mughal monuments if — and only if — you start at sunrise and do not waste an hour looking for transport between sites. Here is the timetable we drive for guests almost every day.

The timetable

5:15 am — Hotel pickup. Cold water and tissue in the car; no breakfast yet.

6:00 am – 8:15 am — Taj Mahal. Enter at opening. Mausoleum first while it is empty, then the mosque, then the gardens for photographs.

8:30 am – 9:15 am — Breakfast. Bedai and jalebi in the old city, or a café in Taj Ganj.

9:30 am – 11:15 am — Agra Fort. Jahangir Palace, Diwan-i-Khas and the Musamman Burj view of the Taj.

11:30 am – 12:15 pm — Itmad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj). The finest inlay work in the city and a quiet garden.

12:30 pm – 2:00 pm — Lunch and rest. Air-conditioning matters between March and October.

2:30 pm – 4:00 pm — Optional: Akbar''s Tomb at Sikandra or shopping for marble inlay and leather in Sadar Bazaar.

5:00 pm – 6:15 pm — Mehtab Bagh sunset across the river.

6:30 pm — Drop at station, hotel or start the Delhi drive.

Tips that save the day

• The Taj is closed on Fridays — shift the itinerary a day.
• Book monument tickets online the night before.
• Keep the same car for the whole day; the total driving is only 45–55 km but it happens in nine short hops.
• If you are arriving on the Gatimaan Express and leaving the same evening, this plan still fits with a 8:10 am start; drop Sikandra.
