Agra Fort

Rebuilt in red sandstone by Emperor Akbar from 1565, Agra Fort was the principal residence of the Mughal emperors until the capital shifted to Delhi in 1638.

Shah Jahan later added marble palaces such as Khas Mahal and the Sheesh Mahal — and was himself imprisoned here by his son Aurangzeb, spending his last years gazing at the Taj Mahal across the river.

The walled city covers 94 acres and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
